ESSENTIAL LAND NAVIGATION There is a huge dependency upon technology in today’s modern world, which extends into our exploits outdoors. Most of us are familiar with how to use a SatNav, a GPS, or a mobile tracking app, but when faced with the daunting task of the basic map and compass it can leave you feeling, well, pretty lost. If this sounds like you, fear not, as you are not alone in this. A survey conducted in 2021 revealed that over 70% of under 25-year-olds in the UK cannot read a map, with the majority admitting they’ve never even tried. That said, it is a great idea to learn how to use this technology however it is also highly advisable to learn and practice conventional map reading, with, and without a compass. That means when technology goes down, which it does from time to time, then we don’t go down with it. We can go back to basics.
Learning how to navigate across unfamiliar land can save a life. There are multiple reasons why GPS apps will fail, for example, loss of Satellite Signal, poor or dead battery, cracked screen, loss of device and adverse weather. Learning to use a map and compass could be your lifeline and that of those around you or under your responsibility.
Navigation can be fun! Learning this great skill is not only a potential life saver but can be a fantastic ice breaker within groups. Bringing people together and opening more creative and inspiring treks in the hills and mountains, helping you gain confidence in your own ability and with others as you become a trusted member of the group.
